At the beginning of the sonata the score reads: Sonata a 3 di Quantz / Flauto / Travers: / Harpsichord / o / Violino / Basso. The note “harpsichord o violin” deserves special attention, as it says that the work can be played in different formations: as a sonata for flute and obligatory harpsichord (an extremely attractive instrumentation rarely found at Quantz), or as a trio for flute , Violin and basso continuo.
